Through keen observation of life, we can determine the natural process of healing.  We are not at war with disease, for we have observed that the organisms involved in disease are opportunistic. Therefore we focus on prevention through improving the personal environment, making disease less likely to develop. Many in the health field respond to disease with a weapon-like mentality using anti-inflammatories, anti-pyretics, anti-pruritics, anti-histamines, and of course let us not forget the ever present anti-biotics. Natural healing observes and asks: why is the body producing inflammation, fever, itching, and histamine; and how does the body deal with invading organisms.

INFLAMMATION

At the School of Natural Healing we teach that inflammation is part of the healing process and we observe that the body uses inflammation to rid itself of damaged tissue in preparation for the replacement with new tissue. Instead of stopping inflammation we help the body’s circulatory process and help facilitate the removal of the damaged tissue through the eliminative system.

FEVER

The school trains our students to work with the body, not against it. Instead of stopping a fever we help the body use the heat process to rid itself of the invaders. We understand that macrophage cells recognize the invading organisms and send a chemical signal (IL-1) that initiates a fever which is also the signal that kick starts the immune system by activating T-helper cells.  You cannot have it both ways.  If you block the fever with aspirin or any other drug, then you also block your immune system from ridding the body of the very invaders that started the process.

ITCHING

The body sends out a signal of itching so that the area can be stimulated sufficiently to increase circulation.  Scratching achieves this purpose but can damage skin.  The School of Natural Healing instructs that heat or cold or alternating both can achieve the same purpose of increasing circulation, hence no more need for the body to send more signals (itching).

HISTAMINE

The school teaches that histamine is produced by the body to quarantine invaders.  If you take anti-histamine you run the danger of releasing the invader to the rest of the body.  We as natural practitioners help the body again through the circulatory and eliminative process.

ANTI-BIOTICS

The definition for anti-biotic, is anti-life.  We as natural practitioners are not against life and we recognize the body’s ability to recognize life that is friendly to itself, from life that is antagonistic. We do not use anti-biotics that kill all life.  The School of Natural Healing teaches its students to trust the body’s discriminatory immune system and rely on time tested foods and herbs that destroy invaders but protect friendly flora.

As natural practitioners we implore you to use the safe and effective procedures taught at the School of Natural healing.  Enroll in the first level and you will have the tools to treat yourself and your family free from the dangers presented by standard medicine.  Take all 22 levels and you will obtain the knowledge necessary to become a blessing to mankind.

The School of Natural Healing’s motto is “Cleanse and Nourish”. Many questions arise as to finding the best ways to nourish. A common question today is “Are GMOs a concern in healthy eating?” Genetically Modified Organism, or GMO for short, is an organism in which the genetic material (the DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. [1] There are no rules and no regulations (in the US) as to what parts of DNA can be used or even as to what species may be crossed with others. The majority of GMOs are food crops.  Pesticides and herbicides developed from bacteria are inserted into the DNA of the food supply to make them pest resistant or immune to the herbicide sprays.

For the US, the percentages of GMO crops include:

Soy (94%)

Cotton (90%)

Canola (90%)

Sugar beets (95%)

Corn (88%)

Hawaiian papaya (more than 50%)

Zucchini and yellow squash (over 24,000 acres are GMO). [2]

The food crops listed above produce a known toxin within every cell of the plant. As a result, the original DNA of the plant has been permanently altered or mutated forever. Research finds many of these mutations are not known before entering the market. Molecular biologist and protein chemist David Schubert states, “Introduction of one gene usually alters the gene expression pattern of the whole cell, and typically each cell type of the organism will respond differently.” [3] Therefore, a GMO is a new kind of plant or organism altogether and we do not know how it will react in our bodies or the environment.

Cotton and corn crops are most commonly altered with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). This bacterium is known to rapidly paralyze the invading insect’s digestive system thereby destroying it. Bt has also been linked to allergies and illnesses in humans and other mammals. [3] The Bt found in genetically engineered crops is “1,500-3,000 times the level found in sprayed plants. Since the Bt-toxin is exempted from the requirement of a tolerance, there are no legal limits as to how much can be expressed in food.”[3] If the spray is known to affect humans, how much more can we expect from the DNA inserted food?

There is also the question of “Anti-nutrients” which “are compounds that decrease the nutritional value of food, usually by making a nutrient unavailable or indigestible.” [3] These are commonly discovered in GMO crops. It is also found that one GMO crop can differ in nutritional value considerably compared to the next. Therefore, this would seriously question the school’s motto of “nourish” since the exact nourishment is unknown. No long term safety studies have ever been conducted on the effects of exposure to, or the consumption of GMOs, let alone the effects on the environment.

We do know these facts:

GMO foods came into the market in late 1990’s and early 2000’s.

Soy allergies skyrocked by 50% in the UK, soon after GE soy was introduced. [3]

Bee Colony Collapse Disorder has threatened our pollenated plants since at least 2005.

There is an alarming rise of food allergies and their severity over the past 10 years.

Increase of digestive disturbances in humans over the past 10 years.

Appearance of “superbugs” and “superweeds” that are becoming less and less responsive to pesticides and herbicides.

There is no nutritional or environmental benefit from either growing or consuming GMO food.  In fact, the exact opposite may be true. To avoid becoming an experiment in this “Genetic Roulette” become aware of what you eat!  Look for organic. The “USDA Organic” label prohibits GE in their products. Also look for the “Non-GMO Project Verified Seal”. READ ALL food labels. If there is corn or soy listed in any form, it is most likely GE. Sugar is almost certainly a combination of sugar cane and GMO sugar beets. Dairy must be labeled no rBGH, no rBST, or no artificial hormones in order to be free of the GMO bovine growth hormone.

If the safety of GMO’s matters to you then let your voice be heard. Be alert to government regulations and bills in office. Call up companies and restaurants to inquire if they have GMO ingredients they may be using. Let them know you will not patronize a GMO friendly business. Encourage them to “go organic”.

October 4th, 2013Why Can I Not Feel Better?

David Christopher MH

So many people, with chronic disorders, ask this question.  And no one seems to have an answer.  They complain of fatigue, sluggishness, blahs, pain, itching, fogginess, hives, gas, bloating and headaches.  Some are diagnosed with anemia, a hypo-thyroid, some idiopathic disorder which is untreatable, or when symptoms cannot be relieved, they are prescribed an SSRI like Prozac with the excuse that it is all in their head.  In reality many of these people suffer from an autoimmune disease.  According to the AARDA (Autoimmune Related Disease Association) 50 million Americans suffer from autoimmunity which puts it ahead of Cancer.

Some researchers believe that autoimmune disorders are a result of a “bored immune system”, because of our overly hygienic society, which leaves the immune system with too little to do so it turns on itself (personally I believe this theory to be bunk).  Others believe that it is the opposite; that an over exposure to toxins and manufactured chemicals confuses the immune system and it goes in to hyper mode destroying its’ own cells (this theory is more plausible but incorrect). The first mentioned theory has some validity only in the weakening of the immune system from lack of stimulus. The second theory would be more correct if we add a possible damage to cells by these chemicals which would then trigger the maintenance aspect of the immune system.

By understanding how the immune system works we can draw better conclusions as to the cause of autoimmunity.  The immune system recognizes self through the presence of RNA and DNA which is present in all of our manufactured proteins.  This makes our protein different than any other organism in existence, including other humans.  Our immune system attacks all proteins other than self.  When other proteins enter the system they are attacked and remembered causing allergies to that protein.  If a similarity of proteins exists then the immune system will attack those cells as if foreign.  Foreign proteins can only enter our hermetically sealed bodies if the barriers are compromised (i.e.: holes in the stomach lining (pain medications), holes in the intestinal tract (antibiotics), through the skin (vaccinations). A healthy digestive system breaks down all proteins we ingest into its’ component parts and then uptakes the components to manufacture its’ own protein.

In understanding how auto immune disease is created we are prepared to treat it.

First, stop compromising the immune system (discontinue use of the responsible pharmaceuticals) and repair the damage (try Dr. Christopher’s “Soothing Digestion” and “Complete Tissue and Bone” formulas).

Next, calm the immune system down, without compromising it, by using Dr. Christopher’s “Immune Calm” formula.  Then cleanse and nourish the body as described in Dr. Christopher’s “Three Day Cleanse and Mucusless Diet” booklet.  Learn more by becoming a student at “The School of Natural Healing“.

Following these simple instructions will eventually resolve the chronic diseases that cause so many people to suffer.

October 3rd, 2013Gluten-Free

Tara Pierce, Herbalist

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine. It is a reaction to gluten which causes inflammation and damages the villi of the small intestine. This in turn can cause vitamin deficiencies due to the reduced ability to properly absorb nutrients, resulting in fatigue and anemia in some suffers. Other symptoms can include pain and discomfort in the digestive tract, chronic constipation and diarrhea and failure to thrive (in children).

Gluten is a protein complex found in wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). The most popular treatment for celiac is a gluten-free diet. Here are some general “Do’s” and “Don’ts” when going gluten-free.

Do’s

Beans, seeds, and nuts; natural and unprocessed.

Fresh eggs

Fish and poultry (avoid breading and marinades)

Fruits and vegetables

Gluten-free grains; amaranth,  arrowroot, buckwheat, corn (hominy), flax, millet, quinoa, rice, sorgum, soy, tapioca, teff and gluten-free flours made of rice, soy, corn, potato or bean (Don’t confuse gram flour made from chickpeas for graham flour which is made from wheat).

Don’ts

As well as the grains listed above, avoid wheat products that can go by other names including bulgur, durum flour, farina, graham flour and semolina.

Also avoid these products unless labeled gluten-free; Beer, breads, cakes and pies, candies, cereals, cookies and crackers, croutons, french fries, gravies, imitation meat or seafood, matzo, pastas, processed luncheon meats, salad dressings, sauces (including soy sauce), seasoned rice mixes, seasoned snack foods, self-basting poultry, soups and soup bases, vegetables in sauce, food additives such as malt flavoring, modified food starch etc., and medications/vitamins that use gluten as a binding agent.

The biggest “if” in the gluten-free world is oats. Oats are naturally gluten-free but the problem comes in the field or in the processing facility. Crops of oats are often rotated with crops of wheat making it impossible to separate them entirely and if the facility that processes the oats also processes wheat products there will be cross contamination. For this reason it is generally recommended to avoid oats unless they are labeled gluten-free and come from a source you can trust. (Check with your local Health Food stores to find the best gluten-free companies).

Here at the School of Natural Healing we recommend using Dr. Christopher’s Soothing Digestion formula to reduce inflammation and help heal the villi and lesions in the small intestine, the Immucalm formula to help keep the immune system in check and the mucusless diet (without the gluten grains of course). In doing this you can be assured of the best nutrient absorption to avoid vitamin deficiencies while adjusting to your new diet.

What would you do if you were allergic to something healthy? Something that is raw, organic and the main ingredient in many different salads and smoothies? Would you give in and never have that food or would you try and figure out the reason for the allergy and do something about it?

My husband found himself in this situation. The allergy was to strawberries. He was not always allergic but after having some of those great red berries he found himself getting canker sores, very bad ones. They were so bad that he could barely talk properly for over 2 weeks at a time. The allergy became so bad that he could not even touch a food that had touched strawberries. In fact, we once went out for breakfast and he ordered waffles not noticing that strawberries were added as a topping. Upon receiving the plate, he promptly removed them, leaving just a little red juice where they had sat. Thinking that wouldn’t hurt him, he ate the waffles. By that afternoon, he had a huge canker sore that lasted over 14 days.

As a new student at the School of Natural Healing, I came across Dr. Christopher’s Immucalm formula of 1 part Astragalus Root and 1 part Marshmallow root. I read that Astragalus will strengthen the immune system and the Marshmallow will calm it. I read several stories on how people used this formula to overcome some serious allergies. I was interested to see if it would work with my husband. Before trying though, I thought I would call the Healthier You Radio show with David and Fawn Christopher and get their advice. My instinct was right to use the formula and use a lot of it. I was encouraged to have him take as much as was needed to train the immune system.

So I explained to my husband what we would do. Only organic strawberries and then lots of Immucalm capsules. The first day he ate one of the forbidden fruits followed by 5 capsules. 20 min later, he felt a sore coming on, I urged him to take 5 more. He continued taking 5 capsules every 30 minutes until there were no signs of sores. We felt hesitant to try this again the next day, perhaps we were just lucky? We tried again though, with 5 capsules of Immucalm every 20-30 min until no signs appeared.

The next day, just as an experiment he ate an organic strawberry and didn’t take the capsules.

Within 20 min a sore started to form. He took the capsules and the sore stopped growing.

We repeated this procedure off and on for several weeks and months eventually even venturing into the conventionally grown strawberries. We were always sure to have lots of Immucalm on hand. Eventually he got to the point of needing to take less and less formula. His body was taking the training very well.

I am happy to report that in less than a year’s time he can enjoy a whole bowl of strawberries, organic or not, and not receive so much as a tingle in his mouth! He seldom if ever reaches for the Immucalm bottle anymore. His immune system has been trained to not react negatively to this wonderful food.

I am so thankful for the herbs and natural remedies we have available to us. And I am also thankful to the Christopher’s and the School of Natural Healing for keeping the knowledge alive. I have learned so much and applied so much of that knowledge to help my family and friends. My training to become a Master Herbalist has been wonderful. Many thanks to you all.

September 30th, 2013Startling Case of Hives

M. Fisher

Recently, my two year old broke out in a startling case of hives. They came out of nowhere and rapidly spread across her face and body; burning and making her skin itch. Though alarming and concerning, I assumed given my own allergies, and her recent exposure to an exotic Persian cat, that she was having an allergic reaction to the cat. My husband and I watched her closely, but decided to take her to the doctor to confirm she would be alright.

The doctors’ office was frustrating as the Dr. spent very little time listening to me, or evaluating my child. He then told me that she was not having an allergic reaction, but that she had strep throat and that it was relatively common for children to break out into a rash with strep throat. A moment after he “diagnosed” her, he left, ordered the strep culture, and left me, more than a little confused. My daughter did not have a fever, nor had she complained of a sore throat.

At length, the doctor came back to tell me that the strep culture came back negative and proceeded to tell me that she had a viral infection instead. I reasserted that she did not exhibit any symptoms of an illness, and still had no fever. He insisted again that she had a viral illness, and informed me that the hives could last up to 6 weeks, and that if they had not resolved in 2 months, then I should come back. I about fell out of my chair, 6 weeks?? Not better in 2 months?? I stared in disbelief as the doctor nonchalantly left the room, and I decided that there must be a better solution. I promptly went home, cleaned car seats and clothes to get rid of any pet dander, and called my good friend Fawn Christopher. She recommended Kid-e-Soothe to calm my toddler’s immune system.

We immediately gave her the Kid-e-Soothe and to my great relief, the hives went away; quickly, safely, and without any harmful side effects. I did not have to worry if she weighed enough to give her Bendadryl, Zyrtec, or any other medicine the doctor had suggested, nor did I have to worry about her becoming drowsy as a result. I did not have to wrestle her and pin her down to give her the medicine, for the Kid-e-Soothe was easy on her palette as well as her stomach. But my biggest comfort was that I did not have to worry about having my toddler covered with hives for 6-8 weeks.

After the hives had dissipated and I conducted some studious research, I have discovered that it is possible to develop a case of hives with the onset of a viral infection, but as of yet, I am unconvinced that this was the case with my daughter. Short of going back to visit the exotic cat there is no way to show who was correct. But for me, it is mostly irrelevant. I have found a product (and subsequently a whole line of products) that I can feel safe in giving my child when she is ill. I have found a solution that I can feel good about. And with the proper education and information, I can take these herbs and take care of my family.
