July 13th, 2011Wheat Germ Oil

Yvonne L. Salcido MH

One of natures finest super foods is wheat germ oil. Dr. Christopher taught that Wheat germ oil should be taken daily, along with apple cider vinegar, black strap molasses and cayenne. To begin, Wheat germ oil is high in antioxidants which benefit the body by supporting the immune system, protecting the cardiovascular system and helping to prevent development of cancer. The virtues of Wheat germ oil also safeguard the nervous system and the reproductive system.

Wheat germ oil’s anti- inflammatory qualities work well in skin injuries, infection, eczema ad burns. Wheat germ oil is high in squalene a natural/organic compound that increases cell growth. Dr. Christopher used wheat germ oil in his Burn Paste Formula which helps healing by rebuilding new cells.
Wheat germ oil contains both linoleic and linolenic acids (precursors for omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids) and Octacosanol found present in wheat germ oil can improve performance levels during exercise particularly stamina and endurance. Octacosanol may also have a beneficial effect to lower LDL cholestral levels and (Octacosanol is a number of long chain fatty, waxy alcohols found in wheat germ oil.) - can you explain to us why this is important? Policosanol found in wheat germ oil optimizes cardiovascular function especially when cholesterol levels are of concern.

Wheat germ oil is one of the highest food forms of Vitamin E; critical for balancing hormones in the body. When Wheat germ oil is taken with Dr. Christopher’s Hormonal Changese Formula  the body can easily regulate hormone function - this combination has assisted many male and female hormonal balancing issues; particularly PMS. Vitamin E is also needed to maintain healthy skin, it helps heal damaged and dehydrated skin by restoring elasticity, and smoothness; helping skin to appear younger and firmer. The Vitamin E in Wheat germ oil improves lymph function, it assists in blood clotting, nourishes coronary blood vessels,  improves blood vessels leading to better memory, nourishing those vessels involved with vertigo and fainting and Vitamin E has also been shown to feed a sluggish thyroid and benign prostatic hypertrophy.
I like to think of wheat germ oil as the oil for our engine, to facilitate the functioning of all major systems in the body smoothly and efficiently… so don’t forget your oil.

Note: In order to keep Wheat germ oil from going bad, store it in the refrigerator or in a cool place out of direct sunlight.

June 22nd, 2011Rapid Marathon Recovery

By Jerem Eyre

The running season is upon us, which means if you wanted to you could probably run a race every single weekend from now through November. With a marathon runner’s increase in mileage/training here is a great soreness and injury prevention method I learned on accident during my last marathon that resulted in the best marathon recovery ever.

My last marathon was number 8 for me, so I’ve been through the recovery period a few times before.  However, this was by far the easiest and fastest recovery I have ever had.  After each of the previous 7 marathons I was very, very sore the day after and could barely walk up or down (especially down) stairs at all.  The stiffness and soreness usually lasted about a week (or more) before it tapered off enough that I could begin running again regularly. However, I was surprised to find with my last marathon that I was hardly sore at all the day after.  My legs definitely felt it, but I could walk up and down stairs easily and I was even running while playing with my kids the very next day; something totally unthinkable on all previous marathons.  I went for a 4 mile run on Wednesday just 4 days after the marathon and ran another 4 miler on Friday. To my shock, both runs felt totally normal, with no soreness, or stiffness at all.  I could hardly believe I actually felt great on those runs.

So what was different from this marathon and the previous marathons?  I had been taking a lot more of Dr. Christopher’s Complete Tissue and Bone formula in the build up to this marathon than I ever have in the past.  A couple months before the marathon, I severely cut my thumb with a saw while trimming a tree in my yard.  To try to heal it up I was taking A LOT of Complete Tissue and Bone every single day.  I was taking 8 capsules in the morning at breakfast, another 8 at lunch and another 8 capsules at dinner.  I did this for about 3 weeks then tapered off to 8 capsules in the morning with another 4 to 6 in the evening. (It healed up very nicely, by the way.)

I continued taking the Complete Tissue and Bone Formula right up to the marathon, and on the morning of the marathon I also took 8 capsules about an hour and a half before running.  That was the first time I’ve  taken the capsules right before the race.  I really wasn’t thinking about running while I was taking all those capsules, I was just trying to heal my thumb.  But the effect on my running and marathon recovery was simply amazing. The training I did was the same.  The way I actually ran the race was the same as I have done before.  I have used Complete Tissue and Bone while training before, but never even close to the amounts I used for this most recent marathon.  Also I’ve always used it after the fact to try to reduce soreness, but never had I used it as a preventative measure before the race.

That’s the only real difference - using Complete Tissue and Bone formula in the weeks leading up to the marathon and again the morning of the race.  The results - no soreness, no stiffness, running with my kids the very next day, and running out on the roads again the very next week as if nothing had happened… Incredible! The stuff works!  I can’t believe how great my legs felt so quickly afterwards.  I will definitely be repeating this with all future marathons.

Jerem Eyre is an avid runner, completing at least one marathon and a handful of shorter races every year.  He is also budding herbalist who actively uses herbal remedies with his family and for his running.

ABC news sent a young healthy reporter to the University of Maryland Medical Center to see what effects one fatty meal would have on her arteries.  She consumed a deep fried macaroni and cheese appetizer from The Cheesecake Factory, an Applebee’s bacon cheeseburger wrapped in a quesadilla and a giant cookie with ice cream from Uno Chicago for dessert.  This meal amounted to 6,190 calories of which 187 grams were saturated fat.  Two hours later her normally healthy arterial system was struggling to keep blood flowing as if she had heart disease.  If one extreme meal can have such a devastating, but luckily temporary effect on her Cardiovascular System just think what happens over a lifetime of poor choices. To see this report - click here

Unfortunately, most Americans already have cardiovascular disease or are quickly working their way to it.  To save these individuals, the Dr. Christopher mucusless diet is essential - coupled with his four basic cleansing formulas and his circulation formula.  Getting people to change their diet is difficult, but the following suggestions if followed, might help them enough to convince them to make the necessary changes in their lives.

There is a certain heart attack risk that won’t show up on any EKG or on any blood test.  But several University studies (October 2010 Bottom Line/Health Publication) show an increase in cardiovascular disease of up to seven times, for people who interrupt conversations.  The cure doesn’t even require a change of personality.  These people merely need to focus on being silent while others are talking.  Blood pressure immediately lowers and stress hormone levels drop.
It is well known that nitric oxide (N.O.) relaxes and dilates blood vessels.  A lack of N.O. contributes to increased rigidity of the vascular walls.  Your body produces nitric oxide from nitrates in foods.  These nitrates in foods are converted to nitrites by friendly bacteria residing in the crypts of the tongue.  They accomplish this via nitrate reductase enzymes.  Then when nitrite rich saliva comes in contact with stomach acid it is converted to nitrous acid and then decomposes to nitric oxide.  Nitrites consumed in the diet (i.e. nitrites found in cold cuts and bacon) will not convert to nitric oxide and may destroy the pathway, thus contributing to cardiovascular disease.  Mouthwashes may also interfere with this pathway by killing the bacteria instrumental in creating nitric oxide.  If this pathway has been destroyed, there are three foods that can be used to create nitric oxide. 1) Beets, nature’s highest source of nitrates, 2) Hawthorne berries, nature’s highest source of nitrate reductase, and 3) melons providing the amino acid catalyst L-Citrulline.  These three foods can lower blood pressure, make the vascular system more flexible and even replace Viagra ®.

May 18th, 2011William Can Walk!

by Tatia Nelson, BS Psychology, M.H.

The first time I met young William, he was 3 years old with a smile as bright as the sun that simply melted my heart; I’ll never forget it.  He used a walker to move around and carried a look of envy when he saw other children running at play.  His disabilities kept him from being able to move like them.  His mother, Angeline, had come to me asking how to use herbs to further his progress in healing. In asking her to tell me William’s story, this is what she said:

William was born the afternoon of May 12, 2006, weighing 9 lbs 12 oz.  He was a healthy boy, yet we knew his body would not be perfect.  Previous ultrasound readings predicted that Spina Bifida would send him immediately to surgery following his delivery in order to place his spinal nerves into his spinal column that failed to close properly during early development.  Myelomeningocele was the type of Spina Bifida he had developed in the L4 region of his spine.  This type simply meant his body suffered a more severe situation that would leave William paralyzed from the lower back down, supposedly with no hope of him ever walking.

To make matters worse, the delivering doctor dropped William at birth, resulting in considerable injury to the back of his head.  The outcome? Cerebral palsy, a condition marked by impaired muscle coordination due to the scar tissue development at the base of his skull from his injury. His doctor’s prognosis did not include any hope of ever walking.  Yet with both physical challenges before him, a desire to run freely seemed to burn bright within William’s heart!  I knew William had the faith necessary to realize the miracle he sought.  I knew someday he would walk.

After hearing her son’s story, I educated Angeline about possible herbal protocols over the following months. She then decided on a program for him.  William’s legs were very atrophied with limited circulation, so she began to massage nutrients directly into the skin.  The practice of massage is known for helping circulation and thus help nourishment to flow to massaged tissues.  The massage oil she chose was an herbal mixture including three potent Dr. Christopher formulas: 4 oz of the Complete Tissue & Bone Massage (BF&C) oil, 2 oz of the Deep Heating Cayenne oil, and 1 oz of the Ear & Nerve extract.  The BF&C oil was chosen for its nourishing properties, the cayenne oil for its stimulating properties, and the nerve formula for his strong nervines, which simply described are food for nerves.  These were mixed into one bottle for easy application.  She began massaging the combined solution into his legs once or twice daily.  The Ear & Nerve Formula was also given as directed under his tongue for a while.  I informed her that nerves take a while to grow and regenerate, so persistence is most helpful when feeding nervous tissue.

After about four months of massaging with the combined formulas and following the “Mucusless Diet”, William could feel bowel movements for the first time.  This meant he could feel nerve sensations below the waist!  Angeline used a catheter to drain his bladder several times a day and he began to feel those procedures too.  She more excitedly continued massaging the formula into his legs. Soon thereafter, I received a call from her and could hear William crying in the background.  I immediately asked what was wrong.  She said, “He stubbed his toe”.  I remember replying with sympathy, “I’m sorry to hear that, he must hurt”.  She then repeated, “No Tatia, HE STUBBED HIS TOE!”  I then understood the significance of her strange enthusiasm… William could feel his toe for the first time!

Angeline continued to switch to more and more natural methods with William’s routine, while continuing his daily massages.  She additionally used the Complete Tissue & Bone syrup for him internally, the Kid-e-Mins, and Kid-e-Calc for nourishment.  She switched him from prescription Miralax over to Kid-e-Reg to help his bowel movements and regularity.  She decided to use Kid-e-Dry and probiotics in place of an on-going antibiotic prescribed to catheterized patients.  She fed him green smoothies and steered him away from refined sugars and other depleting foods.  She also used Kid-e-Well for his illnesses.

On February 16, 2011 William took his first three steps, having no help to accomplish this great task! He did it! We now look forward to the day he will walk everywhere he goes with no supportive equipment.  He progressed from crawling, to using a walker, to crutches, and now pulls himself up and can steady his path near walls and furniture. On May 12th, 2011 we celebrated William’s fifth birthday!  Happy Birthday William…you can finally walk!  Someday we may see William breezing by in a race with such strong running legs that other children may envy his abilities!

By David Christopher M.H.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) at first was not recognized as a real medical condition.  Patients were told that the constant fatigue they were feeling was all in their head and were often prescribed anti-depressants. Today CFS is recognized as a medical condition and in most cases the cause is still unknown. Even though there is no evidence of pain, pain medication can/is prescribed and of course anti-depressants are also prescribed.

CFS has these main symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Extreme exhaustion - lasting more than 24 hours after physical/mental exercise
  • Pain - without swelling that changes locations
  • Foggy brain, loss of memory and or concentration
  • Non-productive sleep
  • Flu like symptoms

If these symptoms persist and if you are taking medications, first check the side panels or information inserts of the medication taken to see if the symptoms you are experiencing are known side effects of the drug.  Obviously if the drug is causing your symptoms find a way to get off the culprit.

Other possible causes:

  • Anemia: can be relieved by taking Dr. Christopher’s Jurassic Green formula and eating apricots.
  • Low blood sugar: can be helped with Dr. Christopher’s Pancreas formula and mucusless diet.
  • Viral infection: can be handled with Dr. Christopher’s Super Garlic Immune syrup.
  • Endocrine glands disorder: see Dr. Christopher’s  Master Gland Formula, Thyroid formulas, Adrenal formula and Hormonal Changease formula.
  • Low blood pressure: can be resolved using the Dr.  Christopher’s Circulation formula and Adrenal formula with extra Licorice root. Possibly 90% of people suffering from CFS have low blood pressure.  If you cannot get oxygen and nutrients to the cells you will be fatigued.

I know a lot of people will be upset that I am proposing such a simple routine for a condition that is described as being incurable, but life is simple and the cure to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is simple and is as follows: Cleanse with the Dr. Christopher four basic cleansing formulas, adhere to the recommended mucusless diet, take Dr. Christopher’s Adrenal formula as directed on the bottle with two extra licorice root capsules per dose, and include the Dr. Christopher’s Circulation formula.

April 27th, 2011Memory Loss

by Yvonne Salcido M.H.

Everyone, at sometime, experiences some form of memory loss. Have you ever walked into a room and wondered what you were going to get there and then have to retrace your steps to jog your memory? A study in Japan showed that one out of every ten young people (ages 20-35) had a serious memory problem. This was linked to dependence on computers and other electronic equipment. This dependency reduced the use of the human brain and recalling memory. Are we allowing technology to do the thinking for us?

On top of the new age electronic dependency effecting our memory, many different factors can contribute to memory loss such as: Nutritional deficiencies (example: inadequate amounts of Vitamin B12), loss of sleep, lack of exercise, not drinking enough water, alcohol consumption or illicit drug intoxication, an event where oxygen was cut off from the brain, brain growths, brain infections, cancer treatments, certain medications, seizures, head trauma or injury, heart bypass surgery, Illness that results in the nerve cells being lost or damaged,  and migraine headaches. Prevention is always the best cure so I will focus first on good habits to practice daily and then whole foods and herbs to heal.

A simple thing to do is drink plenty of good clean distilled water. Water has the amazing power to keep the brain in good health and functioning properly. The brain is 70% water keep it hydrated! When you get dehydrated (which is starting when you actually recognize that you are thirsty) the brain then releases the hormone cortisol, which affects the brain capability to retain information. Stress taxes us mentally and emotionally causing us strain or fatigue. This basically causes us to overwork the brain which leads to mental fatigue. The hormone cortisol is released during stress and emotional upset, this will affect memory. The brain needs to be able to rest and reboot.  Daily meditation is a great way to let the brain completely rest.

Is physical exercise good for the brain? You bet! It improves cognitive function. Exercise promotes neurogenesis (the creation of new nerve cells, neurons in the brain). Exercise has a protective effect on the brain as people age helping to delay or prevent neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s. Just as physical exercise is important exercising the brain is important which most of us don’t address, try learning something new, take a class, sudoku, and crossword puzzles. A great web site to play some brain games is: lumosity.com/personal-training-plan.

Sleep is something many of us fail to realize as important; especially the effect it has on brain function. Too little sleep causes impaired memory and thought processes, depression and decreased immune response. When you don’t get enough sleep, you can’t focus or concentrate the way you normally would. Inability to focus or concentrate inhibits the registration process vital to our memory formation.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following:

  • Maintain a regular bed and wake time (follow this schedule on weekends as well)
  • Establish a regular bedtime routine(e.g. hot bath or soaking in a tub)
  • Create a sleep conducive environment (dark, quiet, and comfortable)
  • Use your bedroom only for sleep (remove work material, computer & televisions)
  • Eat meals at least 2-3 hours before bedtime
  • Exercise regularly (exercise contributes to sounder sleep)

Good nutrition is critical for proper brain function and not just memory. Some super-foods for the brain include: green leafy vegetables, whole grains, avocados, blueberries, salmon, almonds, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, apples, cranberries, grapes, soy, strawberries, pumpkin seeds, eggplant, and walnuts. In addition to good nutrition, there are many herbs that have great benefits for memory a few are Gingko Biloba, Eyebright, Hawthorn, Gotu Kola, Bacopa, Rosemary, and Schisandra. Gingko biloba increases circulation to the upper half of the body especially the brain. Dr. Christopher developed a great formula for  memory healing called Memory Formula it contains Blue vervain, Gotu Kola, Blessed thistle, Brigham tea, Ginkgo biloba, Cayenne, Ginger root, and Lobelia.  Jurrasic green is another great formula for nourishing the brain. Our family has used these particular Dr. Christopher formulas faithfully when we have had exams to prepare for and take. We will take one tablespoon of Jurrasic Green in juice and six Dr. Christopher’s Memory Formula in the morning before we go to take a test. My children and I can tell a big difference in their memory retention levels.Hopefully we will all approach this subject in a holistic way and reap the benefits of taking great care of our brain… that is, if we can remember… Just kidding!

April 6th, 2011Lyme Disease

Message from the Director: David Christopher M.H.

Lyme disease is, in essence, another modern day plague, as was the case with Candida albicans recognized in the early 90’s, but still a large problem.  If you recall Medical Doctors were in denial about yeast overgrowth and misdiagnosed or prescribed anti-depressants saying the particulars of the patients complaints were only in their head.  Today, they are treating Lyme disease in a similar fashion.

One large problem is that, the standard tests approved by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) Elisa or Western Blot test, generally report false negative results - meaning (in many proven cases) that if you have Lyme disease the tests do not detect that you have it.  It is disappointing that at this time, the standard procedure of diagnosis for this life-altering bacteria is unreliable and even faulty; without proper testing a diagnosis cannot be made.  Even still, over 35,000 new cases were reported to the Center for Disease Control in 2008.  The CDC estimates the actual number of cases have risen to be 6-12 times higher today then before.

Lyme disease is a tick delivered bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi.  Early signs include fever, headache, fatigue, and rash many times presenting as a uniquely characteristic “orange bulls eye rash”.  If untreated, it can cause serious complications involving the joints, heart, eyes, and nervous system.  Most doctors treat it with 28 days of antibiotics (Doxycycline); other doctors treat it with antibiotics for months or even years.  Extended treatment with the antibiotics can cause systemic yeast overgrowth, and adding to the concoction of complications, the bacteria can become dormant only to reappear later after treatment.

To even further complicate matters, other invaders activate while the immune system is struggling to deal with Lyme disease.  These include yeast molds, viruses, protozoan, parasites and other bacteria already in the system including but not limited to Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Mycoplasma. In general, most people already have a compromised immune system and during the stress of the disease and additional invaders, the body becomes overwhelmed and it cannot fight back.  Each invader requires different drugs and the administration of multiple medications can result in a Jarisch- Herxheimer reaction (basically toxic overload from invader kill off).  It appears that the more Lyme disease is treated medically the weaker the immune system becomes. Simply people do not get over Lyme disease with conventional treatment.

Our suggestion would be:

  1. First get rid of yeast overgrowth and plug up the holes in the intestinal tract. For instructions to eradicate systemic yeast overgrowth refer to the back-issue of this newsletter dated May 5, 2010.
  2. After resolving yeast overgrowth, address the bacterial problem by consuming 16 cloves of fresh Garlic per day (see Herbal Legacy Recipes containing garlic, especially the onion soup) and take one tablespoon every waking hour of Dr. Christopher’s Super Garlic Immune Syrup (formerly named Anti-Plague Formula).  Getting sick from bacterial kill off can be avoided by doing the Extended Herbal Cleanse as explained in Dr. Christopher’s Three Day Cleansing Program and Mucusless Diet book.
  3. The protozoan would require the additional use of the herbal extract Artemisia annua (Sweet Annie), 10 drops of the extract 5 times per day.  Dr. Christopher’s Parasite Formula is a must along with eating Papaya seeds, pomegranate, blackberries, cinnamon, and cloves.
  4. Brain disorders, like foggy brain, often occur with Lyme disease.  The Dr. Christopher Mind Trac formula is the first remedy of choice.
  5. The weakened immune system should be helped with Dr. Christopher’s Immune System Formula Capsules, at the rate of five capsules five times per day.

Other effected systems of the body can be addressed with the large variety of Dr. Christopher formulas described at The School of Natural Healing’s public reference library Herbal Legacy.

March 30th, 2011Fomentations and Injuries

By Doreen Spackman M.H.

At The School of Natural Healing we teach how to prepare and use the Bone, Flesh and Cartilage with Comfrey fomentation many times a week, we have also used this in our home several times and for many situations. This fomentation could be used for broken bones, eye injuries, knee, hip or shoulder injury and to relieve pain.

My husband was in an accident 2 ½ years ago with his scooter. In the accident, my husband was ejected from the seat and bounced across the road to where his leg found the big bolt on a fire hydrant that deeply sliced the full length of his lower leg next to the bone. The injury was about 11″ in length and deep enough that the hospital did 2 layers of stitches within the wound, pulling different tissue and muscle together, then completing with a 3rd layer of stitches on top. As we walked out of the hospital with 5 prescriptions for pain and infection he said “Let’s go home and do the herb thing”. Now he had done some “herb things” and nutrition before, but nothing like this type of injury. He made a great choice and this is what we did:

Begin by making Decoction
1.  Take 1 gallon of distilled water and 1 cup of Bones, Flesh and Cartilage w/ Comfrey put both in a big stainless steel pot and bring to a simmer (where the steam comes off but not a boil). Simmer until the tea is ½ of the amount that you started with.

Extra info :-) … If it does boil don’t worry, turn it down and use it. Don’t throw it away, herbs are resilient and will still work great. When it says simmer it to ½ … and  yours is a little more or less, that is okay it doesn’t need to be exact.

2.  Strain off the herbs and put the liquid into glass jars. Put these in the fridge to use later. I usually put my jars in the back of the fridge because it almost freezes helping it to last.

To apply a Fomentation
1. Heat up a small amount of the tea/decoction (usually ½ -1 cup of the liquid depending on the size of the area you are needing it for and put it in a small pan). It only takes a minute or so to heat up just make it as warm as possible, but not boiling hot! We don’t want to blister the area. The warmth/temperature helps the pores to open and absorb the medicinal nutrients of the herbs, reduce inflammation and it has a very relaxing affect when applied this way.
2.  Dip a white 100% cotton cloth into the liquid and slightly gently squeeze, leaving most of the liquid in, you just don’t want it to be drippy (Note: after this first use, the cloth won’t be white anymore and that’s okay you just want white to start with so there are no dyes in the fabric). I like to use the real thick cotton cloths that are about the size of a large wash cloth, because they hold more liquid. I also have hand towel size but the wash cloth size is the one I use the most.
3.  Apply the wet cloth over the injured area and immediately put Plastic wrap (like saran wrap) over the “cloth only,” tucking approximately a half inch of the plastic edges under the cloth. This helps with any dripping, it also holds in moisture and heat.
4.  Wrap with something that is snug such as a self adhesive wrap (like an Ace bandage or Vet wrap) or sock for the leg, just something to keep it in place but not too tight, just snug.
I like to apply the fomentation as soon as possible after the injury. Sometimes I have needed to make a quick tea for the first application until the Decoction was complete. It does take some time to simmer a gallon of water and 1 cup of cut herb. You can make it in a smaller amount to speed up the process, just use the same ratio given above of water to herbs, such as ½ gallon of water to ½ cup of cut herbs.

Changing the fomentation- I apply it in the morning and leave it on all day. Make sure to remove it for a couple of hours in the evening to air it out, then apply it again and leave on all night. I use a clean cloth and a new piece of plastic wrap each time I change the fomentation.
Usually along with an injury comes pain or concern of infection, so I will address these also. For pain and healing I would add 6-8 capsules of Complete Tissue and Bone every 2 hours until the pain subsides and continue it for at least 2-3 days, then wait 3 hours instead of 2 hours. “If” at 2 ½ hours the pain returns in any degree, that is the body telling you it needs the nutrition more often and continue with capsules every 2 hours. When you can go 3 hours between each time then do so, but listen to your body, it will let you know its needs, pain is one of the ways it tells you there is need of more nourishment.  Then after taking the capsules every 3 hours for 2-3 days, try waiting 4 hours, apply the same principle, if your body is not in pain-Great! If it is, continue with taking it every 3 hours and repeat attempt to taper off capsules. Continue this until no capsules are needed - this time frame will be different for each person.

Note: Now if we are talking about a broken bone I would definitely take 100 Complete Tissue and bone capsules a day for 3-6 weeks to start.

To avoid Infection we used 12-16 capsules of the Infection formula each day, for 3 weeks (I would at least use this same amount for any moderate injury for the duration of 10 days or even longer if needed). We used this method for my husband (note: he never took any prescription medication for pain or infection once we left the hospital), with this process, he was never groggy and felt so good that one week later he went back to work leaving the fomentation on at work and covering it well because he does landscaping. My husband has commented over and over how glad he is that we have learned how to take care of our health by learning the methods Dr. Christopher taught. I love learning!!!

Have a Happy and Healthy Day!

By Noell Larsen M.S./M.H.

I have heard it said that the Chinese refer to the alliums – garlic, onions, leeks, shallots, scallions, and chives – as the “Jewels among vegetables”… and I must agree. If there is one thing I have prized from my studies in the School of Natural Healing, it is the many ways in which I can use garlic to help the body’s immune system. I began my studies it feels only a short while ago, and since then I truly cannot begin to count the many times I have used garlic to help the body fight off all sorts of infection, for my son, husband, myself, extended family, friends, friend’s children, and more.

One night during my Master Herbalist Seminar, a good friend of mine called me in a panic explaining that her son was suffering from chills and a fever that was just not predictable and was not going away. Being that her son’s health history made him especially sensitive to febrile seizures, she was exhausted from everything she had done to keep the fever down (showers, baths, sponging, etc.) over the last 36 hours and did not know what else she could do. When I arrived at her door she was amazed that it was not 20 minutes later and her son was sound asleep in bed. I had given her a few children’s herbal tinctures (in glycerin) that we gave to him that night and for her to repeat every couple hours during the day, along with some raspberry leaf tea popsicles I had in my freezer and among a few other things, I showed her how to press fresh garlic, mix it in Vaseline and cover the bottoms of her son’s feet with the paste for the night. The next day she called me with deep gratitude for the sleep she and her son had gotten, said that her son had not had a fever all day and seemed to feel much better.

This worked well for my friend’s son who was the age of three at the time, but if you are in a rush or have a young infant, from experience I have found that prepared garlic-oil on the bottoms of the feet instead works really well – make sure to cover the feet with socks of course. Garlic-oil in the ear has shortened and abated many ear infections in our home as well as coughs or congestion by the oil or paste being applied to the chest.

To compliment the age-old use of garlic medicinally, modern medical science supports garlic’s ability to aid the body in fighting off illness. As well, M.D. Anderson’s Cancer Center has confirmed that epidemiological studies have shown that people who eat garlic and onions have lower risk of cancers of the GI tract, such as stomach and colon cancer. Modern medical science also states that garlic may also protect against heart disease and stroke by interfering with the formation of blood clots and by reducing cholesterol.

Using garlic has made a noticeable difference in warding off or the duration of sickness in my home and I know has contributed in many ways to improving the overall health of my family. There are so many ways in which to use garlic and I have only been able to mention a few.  Know there is much more to this stinky bulb than meets the eye, just ask the Chinese, MD Anderson Cancer Center or/and especially… any Master Herbalist graduate of Dr. Christopher’s School of Natural Healing, we would be happy to tell you more.

 By Jo Francks M.H.
Horseradish has been proclaimed the 2011 Herb of the Year by the International Herb Association and is one of the herbs on the School of Natural Healings 100 Herb List.
Dr. Christopher recommended horseradish as a reliable remedy for sinus infections.  Additionally, horseradish has been shown in laboratory tests to be antibiotic and active against a variety of bacteria. It has a high sulphur content, which may contribute to its antibiotic properties as well.

In the book Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices by N.W. Walker, it says this about horseradish:

We do not use the juice of horseradish, its ethers are quite potent and powerful enough when the horseradish is finely ground or triturated (pulverized).  The effect of taking one half a teaspoonful of the triturated (pulverized) horseradish will leave an indelible impression on the memory and a dissolving reaction on the mucus in the sinus cavities.

Walker recommends mixing the horseradish pulp immediately with lemon juice and using a half teaspoon twice a day between meals to dissolve mucus in the sinus cavities and throughout the body.  This procedure has been followed for weeks or months if necessary, until the horseradish sauce could be eaten without any sensation resulting from it.  It then indicated the practically complete dissolution of the mucus.

Horseradish can also be used as a poultice for rheumatic and arthritic conditions. The historical herbalist Culpepper said,  “If Bruised and laid to a part grieved with the sciatica, gout, joint-ache or hard swellings of the spleen and liver, it doth wonderfully help them all.”

In Dr. Christopher’s book The School of Natural Healing he says:

Horseradish is one of the most prolific stimulant herbs there is, especially to the digestive organs (dried root), kidneys, skin and circulation.  It will give pleasant warmth in the stomach, relieves the gall ducts, stimulate alvine (intestinal) action, and increase the flow of urine.  Caution: do not use this herb during pregnancy.

To cultivate horseradish all you need is a piece of the root about an inch long and as big around as a pencil.  Plant about an inch deep in a place where it can grow year after year.
