It’s that time of the year again; children have returned to school and the weather is cooling off causing many of us to close our windows and doors. Instead of getting a daily dose of sun, regular exercise, and nutritious meals, most children will sit inside at a desk for several hours each day, eat a less than ideal diet of school lunches, and return home at the end of the day to do homework and use computers and television. With this likely scenario for the vast majority of children during the school year, parents need to have some “tools” at their disposal to combat the myriad of viruses and infections that will plague their families in the coming months. With that said, I have developed somewhat of a medicine chest to help keep the many ailments of back to school season from invading my home and family.

The first and probably easiest way to keep your family healthy is to drink plenty of pure water, preferably distilled, every day. Each family member should have a bottle of water that gets refilled throughout the day thus eliminating the need to drink out of water fountains or to purchase beverages laden with sugar from vending machines.

Next in my medicine chest is good, wholesome food. This can be achieved easily by always having fresh fruits and vegetables cut up and ready to eat. Add to this some whole grains, nuts and seeds to create energy and you have a health-promoting meal, simply and easily. Meals do not have to be complicated. A simple quinoa/oatmeal for breakfast, a veggie wrap or homemade soup for lunch, and a green leafy salad with a lean protein (which can be a mixture of beans or a small slice of sustainably sourced chicken) for dinner is the best way to ensure that your children are getting the nutrients they need to have energy throughout the day and to sleep well at night. For an afternoon or evening snack, make up some delicious green smoothies or have some more nuts and seeds along with some veggie sticks and a healthy ranch dip!

I cannot stress enough the importance of some form of regular physical activity each day for at least thirty minutes as well as quality family time. It’s been proven time and again that children who feel loved and spend quality time with their parents get sick less often and perform better in school. Take a brisk walk or play an outdoor game with your children every day. It will do all of you a world of good!


Finally, when and if your children do get sick, it is important to supplement with the right herbs and quickly return them to optimal health. A little bit of fresh crushed garlic each day along with a quality probiotic can work wonders if you are dealing with any sort of infection. Dr. Christopher’s Kid-e-Mune, which contains Echinacea, will aid the body in preventing the spread of viruses and bacteria as well as building the immune system. I keep these products readily available throughout the year but especially during cold and flu season.

So there you have it! When children get fresh air, pure water, wholesome foods, and regular physical activity along with quality family time and immune stimulating herbs, they are ready to face any health challenge that comes their way!

Although Autism is multi-faceted and there are no easy answers, I have always believed answers can be found in observing large populations to determine which groups are subject to a disease and in which groups it does not occur. Looking at the entire population of the world we can observe that Autism was non-existent or so rare that it was not observed until the 1930’s. The observations of those living in that time-frame was that a small segment of society was subject to autistic children and that was the segment of society that were wealthy and well educated. In the 1940’s the demographic changed and autistic children were being born into middle class families. Then in the 1950’s poor people were subjected to their children developing Autism. In the 1970’s the rate of autism in children was 1 in 2000. By the 90’s the rate had grown to 1 in 1000 and today 1 in 60 children develop autism. The Geneticists inform us that it cannot be genetically caused, it would be impossible to spread that rapidly. It must be something that we are doing as a society! So again let us observe our society and see if there is a segment of our community that is not subject to having autistic offspring. There was.


A UPI reporter, Dan Olmsted, searched for autistic Amish children in an area of Lancaster
County in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Statistically he should have found 130 cases of Autism, instead he found none. Statisticians could attribute it to using horse and buggies instead of cars or a total rejection of electricity coming from the Grid or any number of connections. However, included in the Amish rejecting our technological society, was their wholehearted rejection of vaccines. The only difference between this community and the rest of the population, that is valid, is the rejection of our mass immunization program. The Health Department went door to door convincing this community to vaccinate their children, which they did. Now we find Autism occurring in the Amish community.


In the1930’s, only rich, informed parents could afford the vaccines, their children first suffered autism. When vaccines became more affordable the middle class vaccinated and then Autism plagued them. When Government paid for the vaccines, everyone, including the poor, was subject to Autism. The Health Department convinced the Amish to vaccinate their children and now all segments of society can suffer this prevalent disease.


Individually we can become more informed; we can reject these vaccines for our children and avoid this modern day plague. All States have exemptions, you should use them.

Dr. Christopher taught that to combat constipation and keep your bowels healthy, exercise is an essential part. On page 34 of Dr. Christopher’s Guide to Colon Health, he states:


The exercises that are of the greatest value in cases of constipation are those which bring into strong action the muscles of the abdomen. The abdominal muscles are generally weak and relaxed, and the intra-abdominal pressure is consequently low.

By appropriate exercise the weak muscles may be strengthened, the intra-abdominal pressure may be raised and the colon may be thus enabled to contract with sufficient impetus to expel it contents. 


I recently learned of a great exercise that will build the digestive fire, strengthen the abdominal muscles and keep your bowels moving. It is an Ayurveda technique called Agnisar Dhouti. In Sanskrit, agni means fire and dhouti means “to cleanse”. This technique only takes a minute or two a day and the benefits are great.  It creates purification of the bowels by increasing the movement of air in the fire region of the middle abdomen. It is a pumping action of the abdomen which is much like blowing into the firebox to intensify the combustion of the fire.


This technique is best done on an empty stomach early in the morning and ideally after the bowels have been emptied. A good goal is to strive for 30 pumps per round and to do 3 rounds.


So here is how to do it:


1-Stand with your legs slightly apart and knees bent. You may place your hands on your knees to support your torso. Your back should be straight and abdominal muscles relaxed.

2-Inhale deeply through your nose.

3-Exhale through your mouth, keeping your head slightly bent forward. Looking at your stomach.

4-Pull your stomach in and upwards.

5-Hold your breath and flap your abdomen back and forth (pull/relax; pull/relax) 10-12 times or as many times as you can while holding your breath, working up to the 30.

6-Release your stomach and inhale deeply. This is one round.

7-Breath normally until you feel rested and repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 rounds


Some of the benefits of Agnisar Dhouti are stimulating the immune system, improving digestion, strengthening the abdominal organs such as the spleen, kidneys, liver and intestines. Plus it provides relief from chronic constipation. Little effort, big benefits! Give it a try and build the fire!

October 4th, 2013How to Use Your Echinacea

Echinacea is a wonderful herb used to stimulate the immune system which helps the body overcome illnesses like the common cold or the flu. As we turn the corner from summer and head into autumn it is a good time to get out and harvest herbs. Echinacea purpurea or Purple Coneflower has become a popular flower growing in many landscapes. When the flowers die and the cones turn brown the flower head can be cut and the seeds carefully removed. The seeds, when chewed, have that familiar numbing effect typical of Echinacea root. A tincture can be made with the seeds alone or combined with other parts of the plant. The roots are the most medicinal part of the plant and can also be harvested this time of year when the flowers die back. E. pupurea has a fibrous root. Other species such as E. angustifolia and E. pallida, have a taproot. 

I was afraid to use the first tincture of Echinacea root I made thinking it could not possibly be any good. I finally tried it because there was nothing else available except my own home made tincture. I was coming down with the symptoms of a cold. I felt congestion in my lungs and pressure in my head and sinuses and there, in my cupboard, was my bottle of Echinacea tincture. So I put a dropperful in some water and drank it. Not long after that I felt the symptoms start to go away, so I took another dropperful in some water and by the end of the day I felt great. Who knew that something I made myself could actually make me well. I became a believer in homemade remedies and began making more and more extracts for myself and my family to use.

To make a tincture of Echinacea you will need some Echinacea root. This can be from a plant you have dug up either fresh or dried or you can purchase cut Echinacea root. If you have dug your own root make sure the root is cleaned very carefully. After cleaning the root it can be chopped up and used fresh or dried for later use. Fill a canning jar about 2/3 full with the dried root. Fill the jar the rest of the way with vodka or a mixture of 50% vegetable glycerin and 50% distilled water. Cap the jar tightly and shake every day for 2 weeks. Strain the tincture and discard the herb and save the liquid. It’s best to keep some in an amber glass dropper bottle and use a dropperful at a time when needed. Treat illness at first sign of symptoms and use every hour or two. Echinacea can be used for up to 10 days then take a break for a few days before using again.

Making your own herbal medicine can be very rewarding and economical. Echinacea is a good herb to always have on hand for the whole family.

So many people, with chronic disorders, ask this question.  And no one seems to have an answer.  They complain of fatigue, sluggishness, blahs, pain, itching, fogginess, hives, gas, bloating and headaches.  Some are diagnosed with anemia, a hypo-thyroid, some idiopathic disorder which is untreatable, or when symptoms cannot be relieved, they are prescribed an SSRI like Prozac with the excuse that it is all in their head.  In reality many of these people suffer from an autoimmune disease.  According to the AARDA (Autoimmune Related Disease Association) 50 million Americans suffer from autoimmunity which puts it ahead of Cancer.


Some researchers believe that autoimmune disorders are a result of a “bored immune system”, because of our overly hygienic society, which leaves the immune system with too little to do so it turns on itself (personally I believe this theory to be bunk).  Others believe that it is the opposite; that an over exposure to toxins and manufactured chemicals confuses the immune system and it goes in to hyper mode destroying its’ own cells (this theory is more plausible but incorrect). The first mentioned theory has some validity only in the weakening of the immune system from lack of stimulus. The second theory would be more correct if we add a possible damage to cells by these chemicals which would then trigger the maintenance aspect of the immune system.


By understanding how the immune system works we can draw better conclusions as to the cause of autoimmunity.  The immune system recognizes self through the presence of RNA and DNA which is present in all of our manufactured proteins.  This makes our protein different than any other organism in existence, including other humans.  Our immune system attacks all proteins other than self.  When other proteins enter the system they are attacked and remembered causing allergies to that protein.  If a similarity of proteins exists then the immune system will attack those cells as if foreign.  Foreign proteins can only enter our hermetically sealed bodies if the barriers are compromised (i.e.: holes in the stomach lining (pain medications), holes in the intestinal tract (antibiotics), through the skin (vaccinations). A healthy digestive system breaks down all proteins we ingest into its’ component parts and then uptakes the components to manufacture its’ own protein.


In understanding how auto immune disease is created we are prepared to treat it.


First, stop compromising the immune system (discontinue use of the responsible pharmaceuticals) and repair the damage (try Dr. Christopher’s “Soothing Digestion” and “Complete Tissue and Bone” formulas).
