Yeast overgrowth is generally a side effective of antibiotic therapy. All drugs have side effects and antibiotic usage is no exception. When antibiotic drugs destroy targeted microbes they also destroy the billions of friendly flora that protect the intestinal tract. There are over 200 varieties of friendly flora that are destroyed and the singular pro-biotic, acidophilus will not resolve the problem.
One hardy variety of floras that is beneficial but not affected by antibiotic drugs is Candida Albicans. This yeast grows uncontrollably when checks and balances from other flora are not present. When this yeast takes up all available space in the intestinal tract, it changes its morphology and grows appendages with which it whips against the walls of the intestines creating thousands of small lesions. These lesions provide a pathway for the Candida to enter the blood stream, causing Systemic Candidiasis, which can cause symptoms that mimic many known diseases.
This perforated bowel is referred to as Leaky Gut Syndrome. This condition also allows undigested protein to enter the bloodstream. These proteins are foreign to the immune system and are therefore attacked. The immune system remembers these protein invaders and reacts like an allergy each time you consume them. This opens up the possibility of eventually making you allergic to every food you eat.
Since yeast overgrowth can cause symptoms mimicking many diseases, misdiagnosis is common and yeast overgrowth remains undetected allowing it to further colonize, thus creating more side effects and ill health. Many people have suffered for decades going from doctor to doctor, therapy to therapy and eventually being prescribed anti-depressants from doctors who are incapable of a proper diagnosis, so they determine that it is in the head of the patients. This incompetence on the part of modern medicine hopefully leads these unfortunate patients to alternative therapy.
Most alternative therapy focuses on killing off the yeast and providing the body with the pro-biotics. These therapies fail to correct the damaged intestinal tract which allows the yeast condition to return.
The following twenty day protocol addresses all aspects of treatment and can permanently eliminate Systemic Yeast Overgrowth and Leaky Gut Syndrome.
First procedure: On the first two days consume two quarts of a decoction of Black Walnut and Pau d’ arco (one quart each day). This is made by simmering the herbs in water for twenty minutes at the rate of one tablespoon of the combined herbs (equal parts) per cup of water. An easier alternative would be to take five capsules five times a day of Dr. Christopher’s Intestinal Sweep Formula. This procedure will kill off the yeast, which on other programs can make you feel very nauseous. This nauseous feeling is avoided by taking plant-based digestive enzymes in large amounts (triple the stated dosages on the label) and flushing out with Dr. Christopher’s Lower Bowel formula during these first two days.
NOTES: The Lower Bowel formula can be taken the whole time if needed. You should have 3 bowels movements a day and the amount of Lower Bowel taken is the amount needed to give you 3 bowel movements a day. It is most important during that first procedure so that the body is eliminating the yeast etc.
Udo’s Choice has plant-based digestive enzymes, which are available at most herb shops, including Dr. Christopher’s Herb Shop online.
Second procedure: For the next 14 days, take five capsules five times per day of Dr. Christopher’s Soothing Digestion formula, or one tablespoon of slippery elm gruel five times a day. Either of these methods will coat, soothe and heal the lesions in the intestinal wall. (You can continue to take the Intestinal Sweep Formula 2 capsules 3 times a day during this time.)
Third procedure: For the next two days repeat the first procedure.
Fourth procedure: Take copious (triple the stated dosages on the label) amounts of multi-strain Pro-biotics to re-establish the flora. Further aids would be to eat raw sauerkraut, Kim Chi, raw apple cider vinegar, Rejuvelac, or miso in large amounts, which are the exact foods to stay away from if you have leaky gut syndrome, yet they rebuild the flora once the leaky gut is healed.
NOTES: Udo’s Choice has Pro-biotics, which are available at most herb shops, including Dr. Christopher’s Herb Shop online.
The pro-biotics need to be taken for about a week to rebuild the flora.
Note: It is absolutely essential that you do not feed the yeast during this procedure. Therefore, do not consume any sugar or alcohol in any form. This includes all dairy, grains, and fruit. So enjoy twenty days of a wonderful vegetable, nuts, seeds and sprouted legume diet; thus insuring a healthy life, free of Systemic Yeast Overgrowth.

AT the SNH seminar and on the phone with David I was told that licorice is supposed to be used with the slippery elm.
Also, I was told that 1 TBSP of the slippery elm/licorice combination was to be consumed every waking hour.
I have done this program as well as recommended it to many people and I am concerned about this change.
Can you please respond as to why this is now being left out?

What can I take as an alternative to Black Walnut? I am allergic to nuts.
Thanks!
May 5th, 2010 at 6:17 pm
You are not eating the nuts…you are using the hulls preferably, but you can use the leaves and bark if necessary.

Can this protocol be used when nursing?
May 6th, 2010 at 3:41 am
I personally would use it, but just keep in mind that the black walnut can possibly decrease your milk supply so you would need to make sure you drink enough water; however, I am still nursing my 18 month old and it didn’t affect my milk supply at all.
It is only for 2 days in the beginning and then 2 days at the end, so there is not a lot of time that you will be taking it.

Licorice is a part of the slippery elm gruel. Follow the proportions you have been taught in the course.
May 6th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
Oh and David changed from 1 tsp. every waking hour to 1 tbsp. five times a day to help it be more accommodating to people’s schedule’s. People were having problems with every waking hour and giving up. Go with what will work best for you.

Mishelle,
Thanks for responding…I did have a hard time getting that much down, but I really believe that if the candida overgrowth is systemic then it should be taken every hour. I blended mine thin enough that I could “drink” it and would drink 2 large swallows every hour. I also took it with me in an insulated tote to keep it cool.
I was able to take it nearly every hour for the full 2 weeks. I do feel much better since doing the yeast cleanse and I have a friend who did this with me and she has noticed nothing but GREAT results since doing this cleanse. I highly recommend it to ANYONE who has any symptoms of fibromyalgia or anything that causes unexplained pain.

Can a 14 year old, with the height and weight of an adult, use the Natural Protocol for Systemic Yeast Overgrowth & Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Thank you for your time,
Susan

Could you send me a list of foods to avoid while doing the candida and leaky gut diet? I know you say to eat vegetables, nuts and seeds. I eat a raw food diet and I need more specifics. For example: what about sweet potatoes? They are a starchy sweet vegetable. Is buckwheat a grain (like some people say) or is it a seed (like some other people say)? Thank you for clarifying.
Also, how much licorice is in the slippery elm gruel? Is there anything else in it that is not mentioned in this newsletter? I am very interested in doing this and I want all the details so I can do the complete protocol. Thanks!

Susan,
I have 2 children who voluntarily did the cleanse. One is 17 and the other is only 10. The 10 yo weighed 72 pounds before starting the cleanse.
He had been on massive amounts of steroids when he was a baby with numerous health problems. He wanted to do the cleanse so I let him.
The only modification that I did was to very strictly limit his intake of licorice due to all his steroid intake as a baby. He started with 1 tsp a day (mixed with the slippery elm) and gradually increased to 1 TBSP before the 2 weeks were finished.
A lot of his health problems have gone away in just the 1 month since doing the cleanse and his weight is increasing.
He is excited about his health!!!!
May 11th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
Basically, all I did was: veggies, and yes it included sweet potatoes with the skin and white potatoes, again with the skin AND nuts and seeds, pre-soaked and then dehydrated (all kinds except pistachios and peanuts - due to the possibility of them having mold spores in them).
Some say you can use brown rice, but I chose not to because of the fact that it is a grain.
The challenge is that a lot of the veggies start tasting bland without the lemon juice and other “sweet” flavorings.
I never really felt hungry, but, I was using 1 TBSP of the slippery elm every hour.
May 11th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Can you please tell me exactly what is in the slippery elm gruel? Thanks!
May 12th, 2010 at 7:07 pm
The slippery Elm gruel is 70% slippery elm 30% licorice root, with enough water to give you the consistency you want. It can be thick or thin, it is your preference.
Theresa is right on for the diet. The focus is on the proteins, high nutritive veges, and dark leafy greens. Fortunately these stringent restrictions last for only 20 days.

Thank you!

How necessary is it to use a plant-based enzyme for nausea? Would a non-plant-based enzyme work?
June 7th, 2010 at 1:46 am
Hi Mishelle~
REading over some of the previous questions, stems a few from me now as well….
First when he says black walnut…Im assuming he means the leaves and not the hulls or was I incorrect?
Also if we add in the licorice at the 30% at say 14 times in a day, that would total roughly 4.2 teaspoons of licorice TOTAL in a day….isnt that too much if its to be done the whole 14 days? I remember ladean talking about using 2 caps a day to help with her addisons…and then even in the 100 herb syllabus..which ive been taking which is only equivilent to 1/2 a teaspoon a day for the adrenals….
also, for those with leaky gut and low HA ….How can they help their bodies produce more wihtout using the apple cider vinegar or cayenne since both iritate the leaky gut….Any other pungeant herb then before eating and after eating a meal would then be a good protocol to add to this? like say a capsule of ginger before and after?
also any suggestions as to a good vinegar free dresing while on this cleanse? im used to eating vinegar daily with all the salads….
and arent cashews considered one of the “moldier” types of nuts?
thanks so much Mishelle
sorry
for all the questions at once but i wanted to clarify….
also for those who started the cleanse, have they noticed any die-off reactions….ive started on the plant
zymes to get my body used to to them and already started feeling horrible …..
agreat place to read about how enzymes work is:http://www.enzymestuff.com/conditionbacteria.htm
i was shocked to learn that pancreatin enzymes come from the pigs pancreas……

Just to clarify, during the “First procedure,” are we supposed to eat a sugarless diet or are we supposed to be on a fast (water excepted) and just have the decoction? Thanks.
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:55 pm
James,
You don’t need to fast - you need to cut out all grains, sugar, and alcohol, but you can eat vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc.
June 23rd, 2010 at 2:36 am
What about lemons? Do they count in the same category as apple cider vinegar and sour kraut? Also, would take col. silver hurt during the cleanse?

I’m planning to take a candida cleanse along with this protocol, which includes the herbs thyme, garlic, fennel, black walnut, pau d’ arco, burdock and barberry. It lasts approximately 30 days and am wondering if it would interfere with the healing methods of the slippery elm gruel and should be taken separate? I’m hoping to be able to kill off all candida while simultaneously healing the lesions in my gut!
Also, it states vegetables are ok but I’ve heard only green veggies since other’s are sugar forming? Also, some nuts are known to have mold on them so I’m rather confused of this strict diet that is needed. Any help greatly appreciated.
If anyone is interested I ordered the Candida cleanse from humaworm. Family based company and great people.. hey sell a whole bunch of cleanses that are much more powerful then the ones they sell in stores. Apologize for the length.. I wish you all success in taking back your health.

I was led to believe Nuts contained a mold that is harmful to a leaky gut, are any organic meats allowed? There are many places online that contradict each other on many levels. SO FRUSTRATING.
September 3rd, 2010 at 3:37 pm
Thanks for this fantastic article. I’m wondering if you have leaky gut and you begin to kill off yeast wouldn’t the toxins be reabsorbed? I was told to do slippery elm for a period of time than go about killing the yeast. Is this not a good idea? wondering too why precedure one is repeated.

Hello.
This yeast is parasites. To kill them is good. The body gets rid of toxins via the liver and the bowels particularily, that´s why it is written in this article to take also the Lower Bowel formula, to make sure the “sewage system” is not blocked. The technology recommended by Dr. David Christopher has been tried for decades, and needn´t be changed because of misunderstandings. These parasates make little holes in the intestines, so they need to be gotten rid of at first, then the intestines will heal with help of the Slippery Elm bark and Licorice root that will cover the walls in the intestines, so these holes get a chance to heal, then of course there is no harm killing them one more time in case there is something left. Dr. Christopher don´t say in this letter as to why, but I think you´d be better off not changing his workable and tested herbal technology. I know his formulas and protocols work, so I try always to do all as is written without any change at all. Be happy that you found a so called source in herbal medicine as Dr. Christopher, and not one who has copied and maybe changed the workable formulas and not even told about additional formuals or about the vast body of knowledge as you have here. Those guys I think exist everywhere. I listen very closely to Dr. David Christopher and what others say about this I will not be able to know if it is true. I can just believe them if they have it directly from Dr. Christopher or one of the books in unaltered form. These will always work and most often also the best, but of couse, you can always come to this conclusion yourself if you test it out. Do something like this, what somebody else suggests, with some change in it, then do it the way it is in the book - and then you will know, if you don´t know already.

It says to stay on the diet for 20 days, but 2 days+14 days+2 days does not add up to 20.
So…how long should you do the 4th procedure for?
November 3rd, 2010 at 4:46 am
Also, does anyone know which of Udo’s Choice Enzymes and Probiotics should be used? They have several choices, each with a specific purpose. For this program, which ones should be used?
November 24th, 2010 at 7:01 am
Hi Addison,
To answer some of your questions, as I am looking for answers too.
In the article above it says, “The pro-biotics need to be taken for about a week to rebuild the flora.” I am starting this soon and would take it for a week, esp. after all the effort that goes into this protocol, I don’t want to mess it up.
I was also a little confused about the 20 days, I would says it’s 25 days until completion of the protocol - 2 + 14 + 2 + 7 days
I also asked about which of the Udo’s products to use and this is what I was told.
-Udo’s Choice Adult Enzyme Blend, but there are other options depending on your age and needs.
-Udo’s Choice Adult’s Blend - Dairy Free - contains 12 billion viable/active cells
-Udo’s Choice Super 8 Hi-Potency Probiotic - dairy free - contains 30 billion viable/active cells. Use this if you’ve had alot of antibiotics.
-There’s also a version for those 65 yrs +
Here’s their link to Udo’s http://www.udoerasmus.com/products/probiotics_en.htm
You can call up and speak with David Christopher during the teaching hour or at a scheduled appt. Visit the School of Natural Healing @ http://www.snh.cc/ and click on contact us for more info.
Hope this helps.
